Ben Bond Pleads 'Not Guilty' In Parking Meter Case

By Dan Corcoran

EUGENE, Ore. -- Ben Bond finally had his day in court.  His controversial case started with him plugging a stranger's meter weeks ago.  Now, he will have to wait for a verdict.

Prosecutors say there is a lot more to the January 13 incident than just Bond's plugging of downtown parking meters.

The lawyer for Ben Bond made two motions in court Thursday.  First he requested an advisory panel, or jury, to decide this case - not a single judge.  He also requested for specifics about the alleged illegal conduct, prosecutors say, Bond displayed during last month's altercation with a Eugene parking enforcement officer.

With a harassment charge against Bond dropped, it's still unclear what specifically the city says Bond is guilty of, especially after the mayor and city manager have both said it's not about plugging of meters.

The city attorney wouldn't clarify the matter either.  "There's going to be many more facts relating to what occurred between the defendant and the parking officer, other than this individual putting coins in the meter.  Many more things occurred that are the substantial basis of the charge," said Dan Barcovic a City Of Eugene Prosecutor.

Bond said, "I have faith in our justice system too and those who are employed by it.  We'll take it from there."

The judge will hear arguments about the two motions filed by the defense on March 1st.  She'll rule then, or later in writing, and then set a trail start date.

For his part, Bond says he's ready for this whole thing to be over.
