EUGENE, Ore.-- Protestors marched to Agate Hall Friday evening, once again expressing concern over the Pacifica Forum's presence on the University of Oregon campus. "We would like them to know their presence is not greeted with open arms," said protest organizer, Cimmeron Gillespie.
Guest speaker, Valdas Anelauskas' presentation was about Communism. During his speech protestors stomped their feet, shouted and, at one point, walked up to the podium yelling.
Not all protesters, however, agree Pacifica Forum should be silenced. "I really think the way the rest of the protestors are going, is kind of incorrect, they're fighting hatred with hatred when they really should be spreading love and education," said Bryce Phillips.
Phillips says, while he protests some messages of the Forum, he repects their right to assemble on campus. "I wanted to come here to hear what they had to say and to understand what was going on, not necessarily to tell them to go away because I think they have the right to be here."
Gillespie, however, says it's not the first amendment at stake; it's the students' safety. "Even if they did leave, that doesn't affect their ability to speech, it doesn't affect their ability to assemble. What it does affect is our ability to feel safe on this campus."
Pacifica Forum members say they welcome the protestors at their meeting, but are disappointed students chose to disrupt the presentation, instead of listening to the message. "If you don't like what someone says, then say something about it. But don't try to stomp that speech from being said," said Barry Sommer
