EUGENE, Ore. -- Some University of Oregon seniors are a little disappointed about their graduation date this year, especially the reason behind it.
The university is hosting the NCAA championships in June, at Hayward Field, but it is also the weekend of graduation. Instead commencement has been moved to the following Monday, on June 14. And it's creating lots of headaches and questions from seniors.
It's that event some University of Oregon seniors are feeling a little slighted about. Many are calling the decision unfair after they've put in their time and when their out of town relatives are expecting it to fall on a weekend.
Commencement Director Amber Garrison says it's actually not a pain. She says graduation usually falls on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday, so taking days off would apply anyway.
"Now it's kind of flipping the other end of the weekend for them instead of taking off those two days, taking off maybe Monday and sometimes Tuesdays," Garrison said.
Garrison says it's a honor to host the championships, but they needed to find a way for both to work and students shouldn't the least bit slighted.
She said they've made the announcement about the date change back in August. That way, students and relatives had time rearrange schedules. Garrison said they've also drafted letters to airlines asking them not to charge to reschedule.
