SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Super Bowl XLIV is just two days away. Nationally, Super Bowl weekend is one of the most dangerous times to be out on the roads due to drunk drivers.
State, county and city police agencies will be ramping up forces this weekend to keep drivers safe. State troopers said they want people to have a good time, but also be responsible and use common sense.
"If you're going to drink that's fine, but make sure you have a plan already before you start drinking. That you have a designated driver or a friend or a family member that can come and pick you up. If you don't have that, there's also taxi services," Oregon State Police Sergeant Andy Kenyon said.
Troopers said if you're hosting a Super Bowl party, it's your responsibility to make sure your guests aren't drinking and driving. If someone from your party ends up in a drunk-driving crash, you can be liable.
Last year, State troopers arrested 50 impaired drivers over the weekend. Of these arrests, 21 occured Sunday after 12 p.m. Annually, Oregon State Police officers arrest an average of 4,500 DUII drivers.
